Maasvlakte Rotterdam

There is a newly built 66kV transformer station in the middle of Rotterdam's Maasvlakte, where large container ships sail to and from. A project in a unique location. But also a project with the necessary challenges and in which our employees were able to fully utilize their expertise. Let's just love that at JAZO! For the switching station - which was built on behalf of Stedin Netbeheer BV - JAZO installed various doors, ventilation grilles, facade cladding and a roof structure for the two separate transformer cells.

THE CHALLENGE

A technical room that functions for what it is intended. This is only possible by taking various technical aspects such as fire and burglar resistance into account. And although that is of course where our expertise lies, in this case there was still some drawing and thinking involved. Engineer Harvey Gies explains: “A fire-resistant grille has been used in the roof structure. This is made in such a way that the difference with the other grilles on the structure is not visible. In this case, the technical room itself required little ventilation. In addition, a roof structure is not something we often have to deal with. That's why we made a large drawing, starting from scratch. A great challenge, which immediately made the start of this project special.”

The switching station was equipped with a folding door. “A folding door is not standard. Here too, a lot of time was spent drawing. There are few examples available and they are not standard models. A folding door has the advantage that you create a larger daylight width. With a door with a larger daylight size, the door wings will be too wide. A folding door is a solution for spaces where you can drive larger transformers in and out,” says Harvey.
The removable intermediate post also provides more space for large transformers to be driven in. “This solution creates a larger daylight height. And because it can be dismantled by unscrewing screws, the door opening is enlarged.” Why not choose a larger door? “The removable intermediate post guarantees fire and burglary resistance. This expires as soon as you use a door that is too large. The burglary and fire-resistant cassette above the door can also be removed. In addition, we had to take into account two exhaust ducts that come through the facade.”

OUR PRODUCTS

In addition to the fire and burglar-resistant doors and grilles - made of steel - JAZO also supplied and installed four solid doors in a separate transformer house. The floor hatch, roof structure and facade cladding then complete the picture.

THE SOLUTION

By using horizontal HV grilles, not only the functional aspect has been considered. The facade cladding in particular ensures that we played a major role in the appearance of the building.

All in all, the 66kV transformer station is a complete project where JAZO was able to use its expertise in almost all areas. “A larger project with special elements made this a fun challenge. We started from scratch because there are few to no examples. You start with a basic model and work it out. Great to see the final result now!”
